In december the forest service put out a request for information for unmanned aerial ignition systems aka fire starting drones for planning and testing purposes. Drones support firefighting operations by providing an overhead view of the scene of the fire which gives firefighters real time information about how a fire is unfolding. Drones can help commanders observe movements during training and get a different perspective. Now firefighters are turning to drones to fight the fire with fire.

Having eyes above the scene and being able to fly the drone to where the hotspots are allows crews to fight the fire more efficiently. Drones in the fire service can also help with firefighter training. They are pretty cheap and widely available so almost anyone can get their hands on one. Drones offer a great opportunity to assess information from significant incidents.
